WI LOCAL EMPHASIS PROGRAM

Is your company ready for an inspection? According to OSHA, injury rates for Wisconsin food manufacturers are nearly 24% higher compared to other production facilities in the state. For this reason, OSHA has developed a Local Emphasis Program (LEP) for Food Manufacturing Industry that went into effect July 19, 2022. The scope of inspections conducted under this LEP shall generally be safety inspections focusing on evaluating machine guarding hazards associated with points of operation, ingoing nip points, and moving or rotating parts of food processing equipment.

This Local Emphasis Program covers establishments in the following North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) codes:

  • NAICS 3114xx, Fruit and Vegetable Preserving and Specialty Food Manufacturing
  • NAICS 3115xx, Dairy Product Manufacturing
  • NAICS 3116xx, Animal Slaughtering and Processing

It is important that companies in the food manufacturing industry develop a plan for managing an OSHA inspection under the Wisconsin Food Industry Emphasis Program.
